Exploring Cape Town and Swellendam
After spending five delightful days in Cape Town, the family drove to Knysna, making a pit stop at Swellendam to explore the beautiful nature park, De Hoop. Although Swellendam was not the most kid-friendly location due to limited activities for children, the family enjoyed their stay in a perfect house rented through AirBnB.
Discovering Kid-Friendly Knysna
Knysna, on the other hand, proved to be quite kid-friendly. The family rented a little house on Thesen Island and explored the city centre, finding a playground with a terrace where Lise could play while the adults relaxed in the sun.
Visiting Knysna Elephant Park
The next day, they visited the Knysna Elephant Park, a sanctuary for outcast elephants. Lise found the experience of feeding these magnificent creatures quite exciting.
Exploring a Farmhouse and East Café
Following a recommendation from their AirBnB host, the family visited a farmhouse and ended the day at East Café, a kid-friendly spot with delicious food and a stunning view.
Enjoying the Beaches and a Boat Tour
Despite a cloudy start, their third day in Knysna was filled with a picnic at Brenton’s waterfront, a visit to Buffelsbaai beach, and a boat tour on the lagoon, courtesy of their rental house owner.
Tips & Tricks for a Family Holiday in South Africa with Kids
- Always carry an extra set of clothes for surprise beach visits.
- Bring toys in the car to keep the kids entertained.
- Choose to stay on Thesen Island when visiting Knysna for its kid-friendly environment and walkable distances.
