Camper Trip Through Florida: A Rainy Adventure
Our journey through Florida towards the Everglades is marked by constant rain. Despite the weather, we’re excited about our upcoming airboat tour in search of crocodiles! For now, we’re spending the night at a campground in Homestead, which we wouldn’t recommend.
Overnight Stay in Homestead
Our first camping experience in Homestead leaves much to be desired. With temperatures above 30 degrees and a closed pool, we’re left with few options for entertainment. The playground is unfortunately littered with cat droppings, so we opt for a barbeque and an early night. Our sleep is disrupted by thunder, lightning, and heavy rain, but we’re determined to head to the Everglades the next morning.
Spotting Crocodiles in the Everglades
The weather is worse than anticipated, making visibility through the windshield difficult. A wrong address in the navigation system leads us on a 2-hour drive to Everglades Safari & Airboat. Despite the rain, we don our ponchos and board the airboat. The Everglades are beautiful, and we’re lucky enough to spot a crocodile just 2 minutes into our ride. The rain may be a nuisance, but the airboat ride is a lot of fun!
Floods and a Tornado Alarm
Our original plan was to continue our camper trip through Florida towards Fort Myers on the West Coast. However, due to our detour, we decide to find a campground in the Everglades. We arrive at Big Cypress RV Resort, a beautiful campground in the middle of nowhere. The area is home to bears, panthers, crocodiles, and snakes, and they have been spotted on the campground site. The rain continues, causing flooding and a tornado alarm in the area.
We Made It to Fort Myers!
Despite the weather, we make it to Fort Myers safely. Given the weather forecast, we decide to continue on to Sanibel Island, known for its wonderful “shelling” or shell hunting. We have to cross three large bridges to get there, and we’re forced to pull over during a lightning storm due to strong side winds. When we finally arrive at the campground, it’s still pouring, but the kids have fun playing in the rain.
Arrival at Sanibel Island
Despite the rain, we finally arrive at Sanibel Island on our camper trip through Florida. We’re looking forward to exploring this little island, hopefully in the sun. If you’re planning a camper trip through Florida, be sure to put Sanibel Island on your “must-see” list!
